The Role of the Competitions

Musicians playing violins in a concert.

The viola is indispensable to classical music. Its distinctive voice has shaped chamber music, opera and the symphony orchestra for centuries, bringing warmth, depth and emotional richness to the musical canon.

Four people in conversation in an art-filled room.

And great violists do not emerge by chance. They require exceptional teaching, fine instruments, financial support and a supportive community that nurtures artistic ambition.

Orchestra playing string instruments on stage.

This is the mission of the Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions: to discover, champion and develop the world’s most exceptional young violists.
