Calling all viola players of all ages and stages in the wider Merseyside area!
The Liverpool Viola Day will be held at the Tung Auditorium on Saturday, 6 March 2027, from 10 am - 5 pm. Hosted by the Tertis-Aronowitz International Viola Competition, this day is a celebration of our wonderful instrument. Through masterclasses, workshops, and group ensemble playing catering to all levels, it will be full of learning, inspiration, and making music together.
Viola Day will be hosted by Bryony Gibson-Cornish, an internationally acclaimed viola soloist, founding member of the Marmen Quartet, and professor of viola and chamber music at the Royal College of Music in London. Interested violinists are also warmly welcome!
Come join us to experience what is best about the viola: community, beauty, and joy in music making.

Bryony Gibson-Cornish is an adventurous and warm-hearted violist whose love for music is evident both on and off stage. She is a viola and chamber music professor at the Royal College of Music (RCM), London, where she completed an Artist Diploma and was awarded the Tagore Gold Medal by HRH Prince Charles upon graduation in 2017. A dual citizen of the UK and New Zealand, Bryony was brought up in NZ and moved to London in 2015, after completing her Masters at The Juilliard School as a Fulbright Scholar.
Bryony is the violist of the Marmen Quartet, winners of the Banff and Bordeaux International String Quartet Competitions, as well as the Annual Royal Over-Seas League Competition. The quartet was founded in 2013 at the RCM, where they are now Quartet in Association. Their debut album for BIS Records featuring works by Bartók and Ligeti won the 2026 BBC Music Magazine Chamber Award. They enjoy a busy touring schedule, playing regular concerts throughout Europe and beyond.
Bryony has enjoyed playing as a soloist with various orchestras over the years. Highlights include concertos with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (Radio NZ SOUNZ Composer Recording Sessions), the Auckland Philharmonia (APO Young Soloist of the Year) and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. More recently, Bryony performed her own concerto, Moana Waiporoporo at the Ortús Chamber Music Festival in Cork, Ireland and made her UK debut with the Bristol Concert Orchestra performing Berlioz’s Harold in Italy.
Bryony is a Stradivari Trust Artist, and with their support, plays on a 1610 Brothers Amati viola, an instrument that was formerly played in the Allegri and Lindsay Quartets. She plays on modern bows made by Lauri Tanner, made possible by Florian Leonhard Fine Violins.

Our Viola Days are dynamic, inspiring celebrations of the viola, bringing together players of all ages and abilities for a day packed with music, learning and community.

"This was a super-lovely day enabling us to focus on the viola without distraction and excellent value for money with a top-class violist leading us, nicely facilitated by the organiser - thank you so much."
"I loved the energy and enthusiasm during the day not just from the participants but also the luthiers who were very approachable. I have always wanted to try making my own viola and have booked in for one of the open days at Newark."
"Best day of my life!"
